long time no blog. too busy refurbishing a mid-century mod bench (gave up and painted it white), sewing new curtain panels (from my mom's seeminly endless supply of fabric that she never gets around to using) and getting the yard in shape.
weather has been fantastic, maybe too fantastic as we are having to water the grass in May. normally i wouldn't bother but we laid down a bunch of seed and want to make sure the new grass is well established before we let it brown up.
spent some of the May long weekend in Deacon enjoying the beach and helping out at our yardsale. I think I made $12 and I spent about $15 so that part was a bust but oh well! I now have a roast pan big enough to actually cook a turkey in, a new coffee table to refurbish (this time I swear I won't give up and paint it), a night stand for Nate's room (this one I will repaint) a new little stand for our entry way (again, will re-paint). Now, i just need to find some time to get all of this done - in addition to sewing the three additional curtain panels.
i keep thinking i should post before and after pics of all of my various acquisitions but i'm a bit lazy that way or i forget until the "after" part.
a very exciting job posting went up at work today. i am totally underqualified but i'm applying anyway - worst case scenario - i'm not considered and no harm done.
tomorrow I'm off to visit Chantal and Colleen in the "Big Smoke" actually, not even. I'm only going as far as Whitby but I am excited since it will only be the second time I've been away from the kids overnight and I will have two mornings to sleep in!
I like pretty things and I don't care if they come from IKEA, Kelly Wearstler, or the curb.

buckle your seatbelt woman and prepared to be wooed
ok, not a song lyric. i'm watching Modern Family and the line (context probably important for full impact) made me LOL.
Julie Bowen is really skinny - like scary skinny and all sinewy looking.
I have no follow up - i'm tired and should probably go to bed shortly.
Go Habs!

Hold my breath till the sky comes back
I actually tried to blog on the bus from my iPhone but it doesn't work...
This weekend I watched about 15 minutes of ET weekend edition. ET is not something I would normally watch. I much much prefer TMZ for celebrity gossip if I'm so inclined. TMZ is for the most part, tongue in cheek and slightly witty and self-deprecating of the whole celebrity culture.
My point? From watching ET this weekend I learned that all you need to do to get "famous" as a woman is a) eat yourself fat, (and we're talking morbidly obese here) in an effort to gain notoriety and a Guinness world record. Or, b) sleep with someone famous, sell your story and/or tweets, texts etc. and land in Vanity Fair.
I was actually more disturbed by the "Tiger's Mistress" spread in Vanity Fair which is for the most part a well written non-sensational magazine. I'm not dismissing Tiger's role (that would be a whole other blog entry), but to essentially glorify these women who are seemingly only after their 15 minutes at the expense of a marriage and a family is disgusting.
I can see future conversations going something like this:
Mother to Daughter - So, what do you think you'll do after college?
Daughter to Mother - Well, I thought I would start out as a cocktail waitress and eventually try to prostitute myself to some famous guy, sell the text messages and/or sex tape and land on the cover of US Weekly.
Mother to Daughter - that sounds nice dear but what about after that?
Daughter to Mother - well, hopefully that US Weekly cover will lead to a reality show on TLC which will lead to an appearance on Dancing with the "Stars"
I am truly afraid for the world.
Also, as I poured over one of the 3 home decor mags I picked up I realized that it really is house porn.
Lets think about the similarities between "house porn" and "porn, porn".
Both use artificial lighting to enhance features and hide flaws.
Both feature unrealistic situations and/or heightened reality i.e. do you think that house really looks like that 2 days after the photo shoot when the kids and dog are allowed back in the house.
Both use actors. Ok, decor mags don't really use actors but i've never met anyone who's "stared" in one of these spreads - I'm not convinced that real people actual live in these houses.
Well, I have to get Nate off to bed now so Jay can watch hockey in peace.

strange things are happening
good week - great to have Jay back home. settling back into routine. kids have been great.
went to a show on Friday night (lullabye arkestra) - unfortunately it didn't start until 11 and we didn't get home until 1:00am and having to get up in the am was a killer. good show though, except the middle band. musically skilled but the "singer" just kind of screamed random stuff about hornets, wolves and I can't remember what else into the mic. pretty sure this guy is an IT geek by day.
despite the lack of sleep yesterday was very productive - 5 loads of laundry (one very small downside to Jay being home!) done, hosta garden planted, bathrooms cleaned.
last night Lindsay and Shane came over and we played domino's while listening to the 'Nucks destroy the Hawks.
today we're getting a load of fill delivered to fix the grade under our back deck so we can finally get our stairs on etc.
so much to do and so little time - and money for that matter!
